The WA Police Union has condemned the shocking assault of a WA Police officer at Optus Stadium, describing it as a clear indicator that lawlessness is escalating in our community.
A group of youths with mob mentality reportedly travelled through Perth CBD, Northbridge, and the Optus Stadium precinct, demonstrating blatant disregard for safety, laws, and respect for others.
WA Police Union President, Dave Flaherty, has called for tougher penalties to address this alarming behaviour.
“The attack on this officer is nothing short of disgusting. Assaults on our police officers is nothing new but they are increasing, and it is my expectation that the courts will send a clear message in this instance that enough is enough,” said Mr. Flaherty.
”As a society, we can no longer accept age as a reason for leniency. It is this leniency, and there being no fear of any consequences, that has got us to the place were a mob of teenagers are willing to attack a police officer”.
Mr. Flaherty confirmed he has spoken to the injured officer, who is recovering from facial injuries sustained in the assault.
“Our officers deserve to do their jobs with a degree of safety. Policing is a dangerous job by nature, but it should not be made worse by a lack of meaningful consequences for those who assault police officers.”
Using an old Union slogan, Mr. Flaherty added:
“It’s time to defend your police or get ready to defend yourself, assaulting a police officer is never ok!”
The WA Police Union is calling on the courts to apply the appropriate penalties that reflect the community expectations and protect those who dedicate their lives to upholding the law.
