WA landmarks to Light It Up Blue for fallen coppers

Tomorrow night, many of Western Australia’s top landmarks, including Matagarup Bridge, Optus Stadium and The Bell Tower in the city and the Koombana Bay Bridge, Museum of the Great Southern and Red Earth Arts Precinct in the bush, will shine like a sapphire to honour WA’s fallen police officers on National Police Remembrance Day.

In its third year and encompassing more sites than before, Light It Up Blue is the WA Police Union’s annual commemoration of the 85 brave men and women who’ve lost their lives in the line of duty across our state. According to National Police Memorial statistics, nearly 800 Australian police officers have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Mick Kelly, Acting President of WAPU and a WA police officer for more than 30 years, said the statewide visual tribute is a wonderful way of reminding the public of the price dozens of the union’s members have paid while serving their communities.

“Light It Up Blue illuminates the incredible contribution, often at huge personal cost, WA police officers have made since the 1830s and will make in the coming decades,” said Mr Kelly, who’ll lay a wreath at the WA Police Academy tomorrow morning.

“WA police officers are putting their lives on the line every day, handling everything from violent crimes to COVID-19 operations. It’s important we remember those of them who didn’t get to clock off their shift and make it home to their loved ones.”

We invite everyone to share their Light It Up Blue photos and videos on social media by tagging us at @wapoliceunion and using our promoted hashtag #LightItUpBlue.
